Unspoiling is not about dwelling on the pastâitâs about focusing on your childâs future.

For instance, if we always buy a child what she asks for, we will deprive her of a developmental need to learn patience and to tolerate the frustration of not always getting her way. If we never frustrate her wish to be held and carried about, we will deprive her of the opportunity to grow more independent and self-fulfilled. If we quickly give him the solution to every problem, we will deny him the need to grow self- sufficient and resilient. In short, we can give children the world and, in doing so, make them unfit to live in it as adults.
Thatâs not to say thereâs anything wrong with making children feel loved and special, as Summer did by making heart-shaped pancakes and putting special treats in her childrenâs lunch boxes. Children deserve to feel loved, and parenting like that is healthy and wondrous. Such loving attention lets children know that they matter deep down inside, and that is what endows people with a genuine conviction that they count in this world. Parents who bake and make their childrenâs day joyous are to be commended. Summer spoiled her children because she had difficulties not giving to them, even when it ran against her better judgment, even when she was exhausted, and even when it drained her budget. You know in your heart when youâre doing too much.
